Fishing in North Carolina is a hobby that goes back generations. Fishing around Andrews, NC is the exact same story. There are so many great lakes, rivers, and ponds around here to find what you are looking for.

You can take the extra step and add a kayak to your fishing adventures as well. Kayak fishing is a great way to stay quiet, get to remote areas of lakes, and land big fish.

Let’s start at the basics. What kind of fish can you catch around Andrews in a kayak? With the multitude of lakes around, like Nantahal or Hiwassee Lake, you can catch a wide range of freshwater species. Be on the lookout for these fish:

  • Bass – Largemouth, spotted, and smallmouth bass are all abundant around here. Also, make sure you know the difference between bass so you can accurately brag to your friends about all the fish you catch.
  • Striped Bass (Striper) – These are also bass, but commonly called striper as well. They have their own line because stripers can get huge and you almost need an entirely different set up to target these monsters.
  • Walleye – These are fun fish to catch and offer a change-up from bass fishing because of their toothy mouths.
  • Crappie – There are a few kinds of crappie around here, but both the black and white crappie can grow to over five pounds! But that doesn’t mean catching the more common ¾ – 1 pounds fish isn’t fun!
  • Sunfish – Fun to fish for with your kids! They’ll have a blast no matter what size the fish are and they’re easy to catch with bread, worms, almost anything.
  • Trout – Trout fishing from a kayak can be difficult, but it is certainly worth it. Go where the waders cannot take you to find hidden trophies.

Where To Launch

When launching a kayak make sure you are launching from a safe and designated area. However, when launching from a boat ramp, make sure you are launching quickly and not taking up the ramp from bigger boats that have no other option. If there is a side dock at a boat ramp where you can take your kayak, head out there!

Kayak Fishing Safety

When you are out fishing, especially in a kayak, there are few quick safety tips to keep in mind:

  1. Always wear a life jacket. This is for emergencies, even if you can swim you should wear one. There are comfortable life jackets out there made specifically for anglers!
  2. Fish with a buddy. Not only is it more fun, but you two can keep an eye on each other.
  3. Wear bright-colored clothing. This is so other boaters can easily see you.
  4. Bring a whistle. In case you need to be found or are trying to get the attention of another boat, a whistle is your cheapest and easiest safety device.
  5. Watch the weather. Check it in the morning and then again right before you hit the water. Being caught in a storm on the water is not fun!

Kayak Fishing Checklist

Last but not least, let’s talk about all the kayak gear you should bring! Some of these items seem like no-brainers, but you’d be surprised how many times anglers have gotten to the perfect launch spot only to look in their truck and see they forgot their fishing poles.

  • Paddle
  • Life Jacket
  • Water/Drinks
  • Fishing Poles
  • Knife
  • Anchor
  • Waterproof shoes
  • Sunglasses
  • Whistle
  • North Carolina Fishing License
